Our History
Clive Alexander Cheesman, a resident of Kloof, loved children and wrote to the Department of Education and asked them to build a school in Kloof. There is a special plaque in our school to honour his memory. Keep an eye out for it when you come to visit our school.
1927: Kloof Government School was opened on the first of February, 1927. It had two teachers and 41 learners. The principal was Miss L Davies. The school building was where Kloof Pre-Primary is now.
1932: The first school concert was held in 1932 at the Kloof Town Hall.
1935: The first sports day was held in 1935.
1942: In 1942, there were 101 children at Kloof Government School. Fun fact…The first school telephone was installed in 1948.
1951: Mr EG Hendry was principal in 1951 and was responsible for the growth of the school.
1953: In 1953, there were only ten teachers!
1959: In 1959, the classrooms were too crowded because there were so many children in the area and the older children were moved to a piece of land where Kloof Senior Primary’s top field is now. They used prefabricated buildings! Over the years, as the school has grown, different grades were split and moved on to new premises until there were four different, separate schools in the Kloof Area.
1992- 1998: Mr R Thatcher become principal of our school. The school has hence named our bottom field after him.
1999 – 2000: Mrs E Harris became principal.
2000 – 2003: Mr O’Neil succeeded Mrs E Harris.
2003 – 2010: Mrs Pinkney took over as principal and lead the school for the next eight years.
2011: Ms Love became the principal of Kloof Senior Primary and she was responsible for many upgrades to the school building and for building the amphitheater and sports pavilion.
2014: We also have a beautiful new building for our LAS Unit that was donated by the Wessels Trust. Mrs Leppan, who was an HOD at our school, (and current principal of Kloof Junior Primary School ) organized the building of the LAS Unit. It was named after her and is currently run by Mrs C Jury.
2022: Our school now has 49 staff members and even employs teacher interns who are studying to be teachers. Our acting principal today is Mr J Jury. He, together with the school’s staff and SGB, are identifying areas that need development to ensure that our school continues to go from strength to strength.
