Community Involvement
At Kloof Senior Primary we feel that it is important to give back to the community and we therefore get involved. Our learners are encouraged to make a difference by packing an extra sandwich which is then taken to the 1000 hills community. We also collect bread tags which aid in funding towards a wheelchair which is then donated to a worthy recipient. Our Art Club has also assisted at the SPCA by painting some of the kennels with local artist Kerry Carter. Charity drives are also important and we therefore alternate charity drives. Last year we supported Slipper Day, a fundraiser for “Reach for a dream.” They aim to ensure that children with cancer are able to make their dream come true. We collected reading books for an underprivileged school. At the end of each year we encourage children to donate their school shoes to the needy. Our Eco-Club also gets involved in community upliftment by assisting in railway clean-ups. Over the years we have donated approximately 50 trees to the Kloof Project in their Arbour Day drive throughout Kloof. The GSA team are encouraged to maintain a vegetable garden on the school premises, to help feed their families.
Recycling
In 1992, two mothers, Melody Morris and Heather Walker, began to encourage the recycling of cans, glass and paper at KSP. Melody grew this program over the years until her sudden passing in 2014 and it has continued to grow each year. We now recycle cardboard, certain plastics, batteries, ink cartridges and bread tags as well. The school gets paid for most of the items recycled and we often win provincial competitions and even national competitions (like glass!). It has been our privilege to help other schools begin or improve their recycling program as well. There is a dedicated team of helpers from Grade 4 to 7 who assist each morning to collect and sort the recyclables. Glass and cans are collected from businesses in the area and large loads of cardboard are collected by our Maintenance staff, using the faithful school bakkie on a regular basis.
Yes, sometimes after a storm or a monkey invasion, the school property does not look too neat and tidy, but we feel that it is an important part of teaching children to look after our Earth and how to protect our environment.
