Academics

Kloof Senior Primary always receive complimentary feedback from high schools with regards our pupils. Read below to find out why our school produces learners who excel in terms of academics.

Classes

At Kloof Senior Primary, we have adopted a nurturing class-based approach for Grade 4 to Grade 6. Once our learners move into Grade 7, they enter the senior phase and we therefore adjust our approach by subject teaching in order to prepare them for high school.

Kloof Senior Primary consists of four mainstream classes and an additional class in the Learner Academic Support Unit (LAS Unit) in Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6 and Grade 7.

Our Grade 4 teachers work together closely with the Grade 3 teachers from Kloof Junior Primary School, ensuring a smooth transition at the beginning of the academic year.

As we are a Senior Primary, our school is reasonably small, allowing teachers to really get to know the learners, giving it a Family feel.

Specialist Educators

We are in a fortunate position in that our learners are taught by specialist teachers in the following learning areas: Afrikaans, isiZulu, Physical Education, Information Technology and Creative Arts. Being taught by a specialist in these learning areas gives our learners an edge as they move onto high school.

Technology in the Classrooms

Our teachers have projectors and interactive whiteboards in their classrooms which allows learners to become more actively involved in lessons. There is also access to the internet in all of our classrooms allowing our teachers to have access to wonderful educational Apps and appropriate YouTube clips for advanced learning.

Academic Support

To ensure that all of our learners achieve their full potential, our teachers identify learners who need extra help or more time to understand concepts. These learners are then invited to join academic support from Grade 4 to 7 after school.

Teachers have enrichment materials available in order to give our learners the opportunity to be extended on various topics. By using all the applications and technology at our finger tips, we are also able to dive deeper and discover as much as possible. With our enthusiastic staff at the head followed by our incredible students, learning always seems to be an absolute adventure at Kloof Senior Primary School.

Learner Academic Support Unit (L.A.S. Unit)

The L.A.S.Unit was set up in 2014 to provide Kloof Senior Primary School learners who have special educational needs with a safe and secure learning environment to help develop learners to their full potential, based on the needs identified in their educational assessments.

We offer short-term academic support for learners in grades 4 to 7, with a 1:15 ratio of learners to educators, in a quiet part of the school campus. Our dynamic and caring educators work within their specific grades’ curriculum to ensure the best possible learning experience for our students. While being sensitive to each scholar’s specific needs, our educators ensure that the syllabus requirements are met. Concrete apparatus and visual aids are used to assist the learners to grasp concepts that are more abstract. We also have space available in the unit to accommodate external therapists, should a learner require these facilities in the time that they are at K.S.P. We have counselling services available for our L.A.S.Unit learners when they need to learn additional emotional and developmental skills.

The L.A.S.Unit is entirely integrated into our school’s extra-curricular program; the pupils fully involve themselves in the cultural and sporting codes offered at the school. This includes all relevant grade activities and excursions, ensuring that children are receiving a holistic education.

Our passionate L.A.S.Unit educators team consist of Mrs Candice Jordan in Grade 4, Mrs Charmaine Jury in Grade 5 (Head of the L.A.S. Unit), Mrs Sarah Steyn in Grade 6 and Mrs Tracey Coetzee in Grade 7 (Head of Grade 7). They work closely together to ensure the transition from one grade to the next is as smooth as possible and that previous intervention is continued, ensuring that learners continue to go from strength to strength in the time they are with us.
